Semantics and pragmatics in the derivation of aspectual readings in Russian
نویسنده
چکیده
Natural language expressions are generally underspecified and need specification of different kinds to get a contextually relevant interpretation. One instance of underspecification is the imperfective aspect in Russian, which gives rise to a considerable variety of readings. This poses certain problems for an account in purley semantic terms: What is the common denominator of all these interpretations? Is there a systematic way to derive the different readings? To answer these and related questions, this paper proposes a an account in more pragmatic terms based on a ‘selectional theory’ of aspect.

Aspect in Russian and Turkish: Semantics and Pragmatics
The multitude of readings of the Russian aspects – particularly the ipf (Table 1) – and the comparison with aspectual usage in the respective English and Turkish equivalents raises the question of how to account for those different readings and the cross-linguistic differences. This paper deals in particular with the following questions: is there an invariant meaning to be found in the Russian ...
متن کاملAspectual Morphology of Russian Verbs in Fluid Construction Grammar
Aspect is undoubtedly the most capricious grammatical category of the Russian language. It has often been asserted as a mystery accessible only to native speakers, leaving all the others lost in its apparently infinite clutter. Recent work in cognitive linguistics has tried to bring order to the seeming chaos of the Russian aspectual system. But these approaches have not been operationalized so...
متن کاملJÜRGEN BOHNEMEYER and MARY SWIFT EVENT REALIZATION AND DEFAULT ASPECT
There are languages – e.g., German, Inuktitut, and Russian – in which the aspectual reference of clauses depends on the telicity of their event predicates. We argue that in such languages, clauses or verb phrases not overtly marked for viewpoint aspect implicate or entail ‘event realization’, a property akin to Parsons’s (1990) ‘culmination’. The aspectual reference associated with the use of c...
متن کاملUnderspecification Of 'Meaning': The Case Of Russian Imperfective Aspect
One main problem for NLP applications is that natural language expressions are underspecified and require enrichments of different sorts to get a truthconditional interpretaton in context. Underspecification applies on two levels: what is said underdetermines what is meant, and linguistic meaning underspecifies what is said. One instance of this phenomenon is aspect in Russian, especially the i...
متن کاملUnderspecification and the Semantics / Pragmatics Interface
The notion of UNDERSPECIFICATION [17, 2, 21, 25] has been proposed as a possible solution to the problem of specifying a theory of the semantics / pragmatics interface—more specifically, of the process of identifying an interpretation in context—that is consistent with psychological, as well as linguistic evidence. The assumptions about the respective roles of semantics and pragmatics adopted i...
